SWIMMING
About Swimming
Swimming is an ancient activity that has taken place since both water and humans were on the earth. Competitive swimming in Britain started around 1830, mostly using breaststroke. Swimming was part of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens.
What are the benefits of swimming?
Swimming is a good all-round activity because it:
• keeps your heart rate up but takes some of the impact stress off your body.
• builds endurance, muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness.
• helps maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs.
• tones muscles and builds strength.
Is it better to swim or run?
If you burn 500 calories more than you eat every day, you can lose a pound a week. You can lose almost 90% of your body weight with swimming. It takes more physical effort to swim two miles than it does to run two miles. In other words, swimming takes more of a cardio effort than running does.
